I’ve considered myself an urban photographer for most of my career. Concrete, steel, glass and wood for the most part. But a few years ago I began to take note of the interplay between the urban and the natural environment. That, in turn, led me to taking more notice of the natural environment in and of itself.

Most of the images in this portfolio were taken in the fall. This is a time not only of color and beauty, but also a time when we are reminded of the fragile nature of life as the foliage goes about its dance with death and dormancy . It is a time of beauty and contemplation, of transition and preparation. There is a special radiant quality to the daylight as the sun sinks lower and lower into the sky. The color in the northern sky has a depth and saturation to it that adds resonance to the already full palette of colors here on the ground. These photos are metaphors for the beauty and fragility of life, and a reminder of the stages we all must pass through.
