Technical

All of the images on this web site were shot with either my Olympus OM-1 for the 35mm work or my 1955 vintage Rolleiflex (Planar lens) twin lens reflex. My film of choice is Fuji NPS 160 because of it’s even tonal balance and excellent color saturation.
After processing the film, I scan it at high resolution (4800 ppi) on a Minolta Dimaage Scan Multipro. From there I make the necessary color, density and contrast corrections in Photoshop. My rule of thumb when working with the images in Photoshop is that if I can’t do it in the darkroom, I don’t do it in Photoshop. There are some exceptions. The blue sensitivity of Fuji film leaves skies looking a bit green after scanning. So I generally adjust the hue and contrast to bring the skies around to a proper color balance. Besides that, I leave the images as is.
I am in the midst of considering a conversion to digital capture to eliminate the two biggest hassles of shooting film these days; the wait and cost for film processing, and the drudgery of scanning at such high resolution. I am not convinced yet, tho, that digital offers the same natural look of film. Highlight detail and color depth are my main concerns. Stay tuned….

Viewing on the Web

I have included a 21 step gray scale on this page and the main gallery page as a reference for the viewer to determine if they are seeing the images on their monitor the way they are meant to be viewed. You should see 21 distinct gray steps, and there should be no color cast in the grays if your monitor is balanced for proper viewing.
